Germany, c. 1870/71. Helmuth Karl Bernhard von Moltke, from 1870 Count von Moltke, called Moltke the âelder, popularly Der große Schweiger (* 26 October 1800 in Parchim; Ä 24 April 1891 in Berlin), was a Prussian field marshal general. As Chief of the General Staff, he played a major role in Prussia's success in the Wars of German Unification. Moltke was one of the most successful commanders of his time. He was the great-great-uncle of the resistance fighter against National Socialism Helmuth James Graf von Moltke.
