Friedrich William III (* 3 August 1770 in Potsdam; 7 June 1840 in Berlin) of the House of Hohenzollern had been King of Prussia and Elector of Brandenburg since 1797. At the beginning of his reign Frederick William III pursued a policy of neutrality which led to Prussia's isolation and dependence on France, but also to territorial gains. Under threat of danger, he ordered mobilisation against Napoleon in 1806, crushing the Prussian army at the Battle of Jena and Auerstedt.
