Preußisches Kürassier Regiment No. 5. Preußen around 1900.
Kürassier-Regiment Herzog Friedrich Eugen von Württemberg (Westpreußisches) No. 5 It is named after Duke Friedrich Eugen von Württemberg. The Kürassier-Regiment was from the province of Westpreußen and the 5th of the German Empire. Rittmeister is a historical rank designation für officers of the cavalry and other mounted units in Germany and in Ãsterreich. The rank corresponded to that of captain in the Fußtruppen. The staff captain, who was subordinate to the captain as a deputy, was called staff cavalry captain in the case of the mounted units.
Rittmeister (German and Scandinavian for "riding master" or "cavalry master") is or was a military rank of a commissioned cavalry officer in the armies of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Scandinavia, and some other countries. A Rittmeister is typically in charge of a squadron (a company-sized unit called a "troop" in the United States, as opposed to the U.S. cavalry squadron of larger battalion size), and is the equivalent of a Hauptmann rank.
