The Schutztruppen, the Expeditionary Corps and the III Sea Battalion of the Imperial German Navy formed the armed forces that were to protect the widely scattered German colonial possessions in Africa and China. Colour illustrations by Germany's leading military and uniform painters of the 19th and 20th centuries, bw drawings from rare contemporary books, and 60 previously unpublished photographs document in detail the unusual uniforms of the German colonial forces from the 1880s to the end of World War I.
