The American 4th Fighter Group, equipped with the P-51 "Mustang", successfully fought the German Luftwaffe in the skies over Europe and on the ground during World War II, and by the end of the war had destroyed a total of 1016 German aircraft, the highest quota of any Allied fighter group. Particular credit for the successes of this unit went to those 81 pilots who achieved the status of "ace". The stories and missions of these 84 men are the central theme of the work. The reader learns how the pilots prepared for their dangerous missions, what successes they achieved and often enough, what tragic end awaited these men in action. The accounts were written by a former member of the 4th Fighter Group.
