During the Vietnam War, approximately 4000 dogs were deployed on the American side for a variety of tasks. In addition to reconnaissance and acting as alert sentinels, these included detecting enemies, tunnel systems, mines and traps of all kinds, and tracking a retreating enemy. The "dog teams" were so effective and important that the Viet Cong eventually even offered bounties for the killing of the dogs and their handlers. The history, deployment and training of American dog teams in the Vietnam War is detailed here for the first time, and illustrated along with 150 bw illustrations.
