Oskar Dirlewanger is one of the most reviled war criminals in history. The tall, gaunt, sinister-looking man commanded a penal unit of the Waffen-SS. The Dirlewanger special unit developed from a company of men who had previously been imprisoned for poaching into a force of thousands, most of whom were former concentration camp prisoners.
