The men of the American 449th Fighter Squadron called themselves the "forgotten squadron" because during and after World War II they received no special attention from either the press or aviation historians, despite the fact that they operated quite successfully with the "Flying Tigers" in China, and were the only squadron to fly the P-38 "Lightning" in that theatre of war. Ironically, the 449th took part in virtually every major operation of the 14th U.S. Air Fleet, including the "Thanksgiving Day Raid" into Taiwan, where they happened to shoot down one of the top Japanese generals in China, or the operations in support of Ho Chi Minh fighting the Japanese in Indochina. Despite its relative obscurity, the story of the 449th Fighter Squadron described here is a good example of the air war waged in the skies over China by Major General C. L. Chennault.
