A volume from the series Legends of Warfare. Naval. The USS California (BB-44) was commissioned by the US Navy in 1921, one year after its sister ship, the USS Tennessee. The ship was sunk in 1941 during the surprise attack on the Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbour. The California was salvaged and underwent extensive overhaul and modernisation before finally being recommissioned in early 1944. The BB-44 saw action in several later battles against Japan. The battleship was placed in reserve in 1946, decommissioned in 1947, and scrapped in 1959. This work provides a pictorial history of the California, beginning with its keel laying in 1916. Several hundred images and detailed captions show the ship in action and in its various technical details, both before and after its extensive overhaul during the war.
