On June 5, 1944, a significant operation began during World War II:
The invasion of Normandy, known as D-Day. The U.S. 101st Airborne Division, nicknamed the Screaming Eagles, deployed their courageous paratroopers over the region in the early hours of June 6.
Our vignette represents two paratroopers from the 101st Airborne Division.
LIEUTENANT: Our lieutenant wears the M1942 uniform used by paratrooper troops from 1943 to the summer of 1944. In addition to his standard equipment, he carries a Colt 1911A1 pistol in an M3 leather shoulder holster. Despite his rank, he does not display any distinguishing insignia from a common soldier.
PATHFINDER: Some paratroopers from the 101st Airborne, known as Pathfinders, belong to a specialized section in demolitions. These brave soldiers shaved their hair in a mohawk style and painted their faces like warriors prepared for battle.
