Centurio or centurion (centurion, from Latin centum=hundred), also called hecatontarch in ancient Greek sources, was the term for an officer of the Roman Empire who usually commanded a centuria (hundred) of the Roman legion or a comparable unit of the auxiliary troops. There were, however, manyfält gradations within the rank. Although the name suggests a hundred, a regular centuria even in the early Republic consisted of only about 80 legionaries. -Wikipedia-
