From warhorse to parlour lion - this is how one could describe the development of the crossbow, which was transformed from a military weapon into an artistically and technically sophisticated, but by no means harmless luxury object. However, these objects are very much closed to research. Little is known about the craft of the crossbow makers, in whose professional practice secrecy played a role. In Dresden, the opportunity arose to trace a unique, evolved stock of crossbows in the records and to collect biographical traces of the makers. After extensive research in various archives and in the armoury of the Dresden State Art Collections, the author provides information in this volume about the lives of individual specialists and their typical weapons, special designs and accessories.
