Although Gerhard Barkhorn achieved a total of 301 aerial victories with Fighter Squadron 52 on the Eastern Front, making him the second most successful fighter pilot of the Second World War after Erich Hartmann, he has almost been forgotten today. The book traces Barkhorn's front-line service from JG 2 on the canal, through JG 52, to JG 6 and JV 44. Quoting from the original battle reports allows the reader to feel the drama of the events of that time. Barkhorn's career in the Bundeswehr is also discussed. For the first time, many colour slides that Barkhorn took during his time with JG 52 are published in the book, as well as a large number of b/w photos. Furthermore, the volume contains colour side views of all aircraft flown by Barkhorn. A book that illuminates the ace fighter pilot from all sides.
