The "Stelling van Amsterdam" has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 7 December 1996. The Stelling is a belt of fortifications around Amsterdam consisting of 48 forts and batteries, dykes and locks as well as supporting depots. Built between 1880 and 1920, they are located around 15 to 20 kilometres from the centre of the Dutch capital over a length of 135 kilometres. There are 31 mostly single-storey forts, with a gap of over three kilometres between them, connected by battery positions with crew and ammunition cover. By the time it was completed, however, the line was already obsolete, as the invention of the aeroplane had removed the protection provided by flooding. After their abandonment, the forts were gradually given a new purpose. The individual components of the Stelling are not only a unique military-historical cultural asset. As a number of forts are owned by national and regional nature conservation organisations, they also form a large green ring around the city.
