More than one thousand forts, fortified castles and watchtowers can be found in the desert landscape of the Arab Sultanate of Oman. Some dating back to pre-Islamic times, they guarded not only the coasts and harbours, but also oases, date plantations and caravan routes. The monumental structures take on an important role in the history of Oman; they were points of convergence for political, social and religious interactions as well as centres of administration. The documentation describes a study trip during which international experts in fortifications dealt with part of these fortificatory legacies, which today form the cultural landmark of the Sultanate
The publication appears in the series "Beiträge zur internationalen Festungsforschung". The excursion report documents in detail the course of this extraordinary study trip and describes objects as well as experiences. The individual routes are described day by day; the objects visited are presented in words and pictures. The appendix consists of an exact timetable as well as further documents such as'' newspaper reports and a detailed bibliography.
