The reign of Nicholas II ended with the February Revolution of 1917, and the Tsarist Empire fell. In the ensuing power struggles, terrifying violence unfolded, affecting all regions and social groups of the empire. In the sacrificial period of the "transitional turmoil" from which the communist Soviet Union was to emerge, different parties, ideologies, national forces, social classes and foreign interventionist powers confronted each other.
