Armed only with their spears, shields and swords, Massai warriors hunt the lion that has torn cattle from their herd. Such a hunt is a ritual of bravery for the young warriors ("Elmoran"), who put on full war ornaments and white face paint over their cheekbones and nose. The jewellery consists of iron and brass rings, cowrie shells and beads in white, red and black. The calves are adorned with a coat of short black and long white hair. The headdress of black ostrich feathers belongs to warriors who have participated in a lion hunt. An upright white feather symbolises a lion that the wearer has personally killed with a spear. The basic colour of the shields made of buffalo or giraffe skin is white, the patterns are usually black or red. The hunt begins by startling the lion and it initially flees in quick bursts, but like all predatory cats it does not last long. The tall, sinewy Masai, however, are excellent long-distance runners, capable of trotting for 10 to 12 hours. Incensed by the relentless pursuers, the animal ultimately seeks the decision in this deadly game by attacking. At close range, one warrior hurls his spear at the leaping lion and covers himself with his shield. The others thrust with their spears. Our series shows lions in various attacking and fighting positions, a lioness and throwing and thrusting Masai hunters. The bravest one has grabbed a lion's tail.
