The principes formed the second meeting of the three-tiered Roman order of battle. They were armed with sword (gladius) and two heavy throwing spears (pila). The body protection consisted of a large oval shield (scutum), a helmet and chain mail or a bronze breastplate (pectorale). In battle, the throwing spears were used first and then the sword. Our series shows principes attacking an opponent fighting from an elevated position, either from elephants or a rampart. Engraving: Lick
