The great Opet festival illustrates in a special way the splendour of ancient Thebes (today Luxor). This festival in honour of the god Amon was celebrated annually on New Year's Day. During this procession, the god was brought on a barque in a ceremonial procession from his temple in Karnak to his "Southern Harem" in Luxor. Priests, musicians and dancers accompanied the barge. Ancient Egypt is the general name for the country of Egypt in ancient times. The Egyptian name was Kemet and means "black land". Kemet refers to the delta of the Nile and goes back to the black mud that remained after the annual Nile flood and guaranteed a fertile harvest. Another name for the land of antiquity was Ta meri, which translates as "beloved land".
