The world-renowned American actor James Stewart participated in World War II as a bomber pilot, taking part in attacks on targets throughout Germany, including Berlin. These attacks are analyzed in detail, along with a collection of photographs of the aircraft Stewart flew and the men he flew with. His contribution to the victory over Germany was not limited to flying B-24 bombers. He also served for a time as an operations officer, leading the Liberators of the 2nd Bombardment Squadron from the cockpit of a de Havilland Mosquito in an attack on the Halle railway yards. For his service as assistant commander of the 2nd Bombardment Squadron, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters. The French awarded him the Croix de Guerre with Palm. After the war, James Stewart, who had risen to the rank of lieutenant colonel, returned to the silver screen. He continued to serve in the Army Air Forces Reserve and was promoted to brigadier general during this time. This made Stewart the highest-ranking actor in American military history.
