To prepare for the liberation of the northern part of the Netherlands, Operation Amherst was launched on the night of April 7-8, 1945. This last airborne operation of the Second World War was carried out by 702 French paratroopers (SAS). After landing in the province of Drenthe and part of southeast Friesland, fighting quickly broke out. Canadian and British forces subsequently liberated Groningen and the Westerbork transit camp and broke the Delfzijl pocket.
