This account of life in a German prisoner-of-war camp differs from the usual British POW reports in that the author was a gunner in the Royal Artillery not an officer and was recognised by the German authorities as a medic and therefore protected personnel. As such, he provides a unique insight into life as a prisoner of war of the Germans. He vividly describes everyday life in prisoner-of-war camps and his duties and experiences as a medic over a period of five years. He also gives a vivid account of a three-month, thousand-mile forced march from Poland to Germany in the depths of winter towards the end of the war and his experiences as a medic. According to his account, only seven hundred of the three thousand men who set out on the march survived.
