The concluding part of John D. Grainger's history of the Seleucids traces the turbulent last century of their empire. During this period it was rocked by dynastic disputes, secessions and rebellions, the religiously inspired revolt of the Jewish Maccabees, civil wars and external invasions from Egypt in the west and the Parthians in the east. In the 80s BC, the empire disintegrated, was internally fragmented and was under pressure from the expanding powers of Rome and the Parthians. This is a fitting, dramatic and colourful conclusion to John Grainger's masterful portrayal of this once mighty empire.
