Richard I (called Löwenherz, French Richard Ier CÅ¥ur de Lion, English Richard I the Lionheart, actually Richard PlantagenÅt; * 8 September 1157 at Oxford; Ä 6 April 1199 at ChÃlus) was King of England from 1189 until his death. From 1172 until the year of his coronation, Richard was Duke of Aquitaine.
