The Byzantine Empire, also known as Byzantium or, due to its historical origin, the Eastern Roman Empire, was an empire in the Eastern Mediterranean. It arose in Late Antiquity from the eastern half of the Roman Empire after the division of the empire in 395 and ended with the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottomans in 1453.
