The battle for the Cotentin Peninsula began on D-Day and was the scene of some of the fiercest fighting of the Battle of Normandy, with heavy casualties on both sides. The important harbour of Cherbourg was liberated at the end of June, but the battle to clear the peninsula lasted well into July. This six-week battle of attrition paved the way for the decisive American breakout from the Bocage, but was largely overlooked. In fact, the German forces involved have never been adequately investigated. By analysing German records and reports as well as Allied intelligence documents, Niels Henkemans reconstructs the battle from the perspective of the units involved. The first part of a multi-volume series, "Defending Normandy" Volume 1A looks at the role of the LXXXIV A.K. in the development of the defence of Normandy from 1941 onwards. It also examines infantry divisions in general and two in particular during the fighting in the summer of 1944. By focusing on formations, the series provides a deeper insight into the fighting than can be achieved through a traditional campaign approach. Vol.1B continues with four more divisions.
