The Normans were descendants of vikings that established kingdoms in Normandy and became acculturated by the Franks and Gallo-French. In 1066 they would cross the channel and acquire lands in England - deposing the Anglo-Saxon aristocracy. From this new Norman-french speaking aristocracy the modern english language developed as a hybrid of Anglo-Saxon and Norman French.
