Until the late 1980s, it was assumed in both the West and the East that any potential conflict would initially develop within the territory of the two German states. Accordingly, the air forces of the NVA were well equipped by the Soviet Union. From the outset, aircraft such as the MiG-15, later the MiG-21 and finally the state-of-the-art MiG-29 were in service with the air force.
