The English term "Coast Guard" describes a paramilitary force for the protection of coastal waters. By far the largest coast guard in the world, the U.S. Coast Guard is the equivalent of a full-fledged navy in size, number of ships and equipment. During World War I and World War II, the U.S. Coast Guard was part of the U.S. Navy; after changing allegiances, it has been part of the Department of Homeland Security since 2003.
For historical reasons, it still calls its ships "cutters". This inventory is described here in detail, class by class, and documented photographically.
