Fighter Wing 55 "Greif" was established in 1937 and flew missions over Poland, France, England and Russia during the Second World War. Attacks against the Soviet armaments industry and supply flights to Stalingrad were just as much a part of everyday wartime operations as the later evacuation of Crimea and support for the isolated German units on the Atlantic coast following the invasion. In total, KG 55 flew over 5,3547 missions and lost 1631 members in the process. However, this book presents far more than statistics - it provides an insightful account of the types of combat aircraft used, the role of meteorology in combat and the tactics of the Soviet air force during the Second World War.
