This book presents the development of American aircraft carriers from the end of World War 2 to the present. It covers the "Midway" and "Essex" class aircraft carriers, which were extensively modernised after 1945 and, later equipped with angled flight decks and jet fighters, were in service in some cases until the Vietnam War. The various classes of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers from the recent past and present are also documented with numerous photographs.
In addition to the ships themselves, the book also presents the development of carrier aircraft to a somewhat lesser extent.
