As a large castle and residence of the Counts of Henneberg, as a Saxon mountain castle and Luther's stronghold, as an Ernestine state fortress during the Thirty Years' War and as a spectacular building project of the castle renaissance, the Veste Coburg is one of Germany's most important architectural monuments. Documents mention the name Koburk since the 11th century, but a stone castle on Coburg's Festungsberg (Fortress Hill) is first mentioned in 1225. The recently identified beginnings of the current complex also date back to this period. The 800th anniversary provided an opportunity for new research, which is presented in this volume. The contributions cover everything from the settlement of the fortress hill in prehistory and early history to more recent monument preservation measures. The structural development of the complex and the respective motivations of the builders and architects are presented here in a manner that is, in some cases, considerably more precise than before and, in others, fundamentally new.
