The German Kampfgeschwader 6, about which little is known due to its relatively short existence, was assembled in 1941 to support KG 2. The entire III/LG 1 was recalled from the Eastern Front to be incorporated into the new squadron. It was not until August 1942 that the first Ju 88 of KG 6 operated over the English Channel, but the squadron was immediately involved in the fighting at Dieppe during the bloody Canadian landing.
In November, the unit - split between France and the Netherlands - served as a rearguard to the occupation of Vichy France. At the same time, the best crews were drafted into a "task force" sent to the Mediterranean to support the Afrika Korps. In early 1943, KG 6 found itself torn between Italy, Denmark and France, from where it continued to launch some operations against Britain. However, in June, when the entire unit was converted to Ju 88s, two groups were withdrawn from France to fight in Italy. At the end of 1943, II/KG 6 was also sent to fight in the Aegean. In early 1944, the squadron flew attacks on Britain. KG 6 took part in Operation "Steinbock", in which the losses were serious. All this shortly before Operation "Overlord", the Allied landings in Normandy, which were also to result in heavy losses for KG 6. KG 6 withdrew and was disbanded in September 1944 due to its heavy losses. However, the squadron was to rise like the Phoenix from the ashes as KG (J)/6, a fighter squadron equipped with Me 262 jet aircraft, among other aircraft. In the months that followed, KG (J)/6 experienced the final upheavals of the Luftwaffe until the surrender of the Third Reich. Its pilots, however, fought until early May 1945.
