In June 1940, a young engineer in Bordeaux finds himself, through extraordinary circumstances, appointed chief engineer of the Génie rural (agricultural engineering). The location of this large port makes the Génie rural, which physically manages the land, vital to the occupying forces. The author's father is officially required to cooperate, but acts in secret.
