In 1966 the M16 was introduced into General Service with the U.S. Military and proved a controversial choice because of its early teething problems... Many Marines in particular preferred their old M14s which were rugged, accurate and reliable. However by 1968 virtually every Grunt carried an M16. It was light, just 2.5kg, and could fire single shot and fully automatic and would become one of the most manufactured and widespread combat weapons of the 20th Century and beyond.
