During the age of muzzle-loading muskets, ramrods were essential for pushing the cartridge (power and ball) down the barrel and seating it firmly against the breech. During a loading drill after using the long metal rod to ram the charge home the rod is then withdrawn and returned to its channel on the underside of the musket for safety and reuse.
