In 1688, Jacobite John Stevens translated Allain Mallet's The Works of Mars or Art of War, thereby providing an important English-language study of military technology and military discipline as applied in the early years of Louis XIV's reign. This was a crucial transitional period from the old tactics of the pike and shot era to the new methods of warfare of the cavalry and musket era, but also an era in which fortifications played an important role in military campaigns.
