The Feld- bzw. Festungsluftschiffer (French: Aerostiers) were militärische Aufklärungseinheiten (military reconnaissance units) equipped with tethered balloons of various systems and used for battlefield and artillery observation. They experienced their heyday during the First World War on the Western Front. The type of balloon used is called an observation or späh balloon. Field airships did not operate airships in the modern sense, but gas balloons.
