The French Army was quickly defeated by the German armies in 1940. However, several units managed to escape capture and repaired in the United Kingdom. Under the leadership of General De Gaulle the Free French Forces were quickly established to help Allies in the war against the Third Reich. In 1944, both on the Italian front and on that of Normandy in the aftermath of D-Day, these forces were able to return to action against the german forces and contribute until the final victory against Germany.
