The JSF Joint Strike Fighter program was set up to develop a new fifth-generation all-time multi-role fighter capable of providing a valid substitute for current US and NATO ground attack planes. The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II single-seater was born from the project. The V / STOL version, named F-35B, was designed for short take-off and vertical landing, ideal for use by helicopter carriers and small aircraft carriers, and was adopted by the US Marine forces, by the Royal Navy and by the Italian and Japanese navies.
