The Boeing B-17 "Flying Fortress" four-engine heavy bomber was used extensively by the United States Army Air Force during the Second World War. It was produced in large numbers and was primarily used by the 8th Air Force for strategic daytime bombing missions on the European front, supported by long-range fighters as escorts. The "F" version represented a significant further development compared to the previous models. The Boeing B-17F was characterised by an increased range, the ability to carry a considerable offensive load and improved defensive armament consisting of ten .50 calibre heavy machine guns. The ability of the B-17 "Flying Fortress" to return safely to base even in the event of severe structural damage caused by enemy action was particularly appreciated by the crews.
