The Order of St John came into being after the conquest of Jerusalem by the army of the First Crusade in 1099 as the Order of the Hospital of St John at Jerusalem (Latin name: Ordo Hospitalis sancti Johannis Ierosolimitani). The order was also called the Knights' Order of Saint John of the Hospital of Jerusalem, and the knights were known as Knights of St John or Hospitallers. -Wikipedia-
