Hitler seized power in Germany in 1933 and quickly rejected the Treaty of Versailles, including the restrictions on the construction of fortifications. This marked the beginning of a major fortification program along the Reich's eastern and southern borders. From 1935 onwards, various types of modern fortifications were planned, and by 1937, 26 fortified lines against France, Czechoslovakia, and Poland, with a length of over 3,500 km, had been built.
