The NVA was a novelty in German military history, just as the state of which it was the strongest organ of power was not a successor state to previous German states. As a product of the Cold War, it was based on the KVP and only came into being in the mid-1950s when a process of revolutionising the military system began. In its early years, its military capability was low, reaching its peak in the early 1980s. Impressed by both their public image and the high level of their combat readiness and training, NVA members were sometimes referred to by observers as the "Red Prussians".
