The book offers an insight into the world of a German Armed Forces veteran of Afghanistan authentic, honest and moving. Wolfgang Groth looks back on a total of seven foreign missions between 2003 and 2013. He was on the ground when four German soldiers were killed and more than 30 were seriously wounded in a devastating bomb attack on a Bundeswehr bus on 7 June 2003. In his autobiography, he recounts the human dimensions of such extreme experiences. He vividly illustrates how soldiers on deployment are torn between their concerns for their loved ones at home and their sense of duty. Groth does not shy away from describing his feelings and impressions of visits by several defence ministers and state secretaries. As a soldier, he sometimes feels let down by politicians and expresses this in his autobiography.
