The MiniKit range is expanded with new design variants. The 996 series (model year 1998) ushered in a new era for the 911 series: The previously air-cooled engine was now water-cooled. Compared to its predecessor, the 996 also became more "bulky" (wider and longer), which somewhat shifted its appearance away from that of a "classic" sports car. The introduction of the Boxster itself, which was somewhat cheaper, brought criticism to Porsche, as it was not a typical 911 and thus the "risk of confusion" was high.
