On December 19, 2014, the first German Airbus A400M "Atlas" landed in Wunstorf, Lower Saxony. With the arrival of the 54+01, a new era began for Air Transport Wing 62. After several program delays, the A400M has become an indispensable part of the German Air Force and the multinational alliance. Compared to the Transall C-160, which it replaced, the "Atlas" can transport a maximum of 37 tons of payload, more than twice as far over 4,000 kilometers. In addition to aircraft such as a Tiger attack helicopter, three all-terrain vehicles, a Fuchs wheeled armored vehicle, and up to 116 soldiers, the German A400Ms fly humanitarian missions. Over the course of 2026, the fleet strength of Germany's only transport wing in Wunstorf will grow further, to 53 aircraft. Of the ten nations in Europe and Asia that currently operate or have ordered the A400M, the German Air Force will be the world's largest operator of Airbus's multi-talented aircraft.
