A good 50 years ago, on 26 October 1973, the Alpha Jet took off on its maiden flight. Developed in Franco-German cooperation by the Dassault-Breguet and Dornier companies, the twin-engine aircraft was characterised by its high reliability, excellent flight characteristics and manoeuvrability, which is still a source of enthusiasm at air shows today. Whether as a training aircraft, as it was used for decades in France and Belgium, for example, or as a light fighter-bomber, where it was deployed in three squadrons of the German Air Force from 1979, the Alpha Jet combined both tasks in a compact format. The first prototype, which underwent extensive testing from 1973 onwards, is a novelty in its unusual livery with the national insignia of both partner countries. Today, this aircraft is preserved and exhibited in the Dornier Museum in Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance.
