Volume 53 of the series From Musket to Maxim 1815-1914. Like Spicheren, the Battle of Wörth was an encounter battle in the early stages of the Franco-Prussian War and had the same outcome: after a valiant defence, the French were forced to retreat from the battlefield. Although Henderson has made this book shorter than his study of Spicheren, he has carefully selected his sources and again drawn on regimental histories. He presents a detailed account of the battle with additional commentary on the tactics employed and the qualities (or shortcomings) of the generals and the soldiers they led. This new, expanded edition not only includes all the maps from the original, but also a new introduction by Duncan Rogers, additional illustrations and a bibliography on the Battle of Wörth.
