Although Noriega had once maintained close ties with US intelligence agencies, relations had deteriorated in the mid-1980s when Noriega deposed democratically elected President Nicolas Ardito Barletta and was indicted by the US for drug trafficking. Operation Just Cause examines Panama's general history and its complex relationship with the US leading up to the eve of the invasion, as well as the military regimes that ruled between 1968 and 1989, before delving into the Panama Defense Force and the overwhelming US military machine that was used against it. The invasion itself and its aftermath are described in detail.
